Fastmail initially used Google reCAPTCHA, but their customers were unhappy because it collected, stored, and transmitted PII.  Switching to hCaptcha solved the problem and delighted Fastmail customers.

For over 20 years, Fastmail has helped users and organizations increase productivity and reclaim control of personal information through email solutions that don’t compromise user privacy.

Fastmail, like all email services, also has ongoing bot mitigation needs. While Fastmail initially implemented Google reCAPTCHA to address this, they learned that reCAPTCHA stored, shared, and relied on user personal history and information to make its evaluations.

As a privacy-focused email service, this was not what they, or their customers, wanted.

In their quest to replace reCAPTCHA with a better solution, Fastmail had a number of important requirements:

  • The solution must be effective in detecting bots and minimizing fraud.
  • It needs to be easy to implement.
  • There must not be a noticeable impact on performance.
  • It needs to provide a positive experience for legitimate users.
  • The solution must not retain any PII or violate privacy laws.

After Fastmail thoroughly evaluated their options, hCaptcha Enterprise was the only system tested that met all requirements.

Switching to hCaptcha Enterprise and its Zero PII features means Fastmail’s vision and ideals are now fully aligned with their practices, and their customers are pleased with the new solution.
